I was absolutely hooked and reached out about reading the full Heart of Mist book. I was blown away by the fact that Helen was able to make me care so much about everything to do with this world and Bleak in such a short amount of time. The world was beautiful, the writing was unlike any I had read, and I fell in love with Bleak. I had the opportunity to read two short stories that tie into the world of Heart of Mist back in June and absolutely loved them. The leader of an infamous society of warriors, the Valia Kindred, lays claim to her as well, and Bleak finds herself in the middle of a much bigger battle than she anticipated." Thank you to Helen Scheuerer for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for review! All opinions are my own. But the king isn’t the only one interested in Bleak’s powers. Still grieving the death of her guardian and dangerously self-medicating with alcohol, Bleak is snatched from her home by the Commander of the King’s Army, and summoned to the capital. From Goodreads: "In a realm where toxic mist sweeps the lands and magic is forbidden, all Bleak wants is a cure for her power.

Still, I have to take Zahler’s books as they are and, while they never impress me enough to make me want to reread them, they serve me well when I want something pleasant and light. One could argue that the intended audience justifies a more streamlined approach, though many middle grade books manage to address difficult themes and to introduce complex or even troubled characters while remaining age-appropriate. I accepted long ago that Diane Zahler’s fairytale retellings lack much depth or subtlety. When the curse takes hold despite all their precautions, Aurora and Luna set off on a quest to find their fairy godmother and change their fate. Like their mother, Aurora suffers under a curse cast when she was a baby: if she touches a sharp object, she will sleep for a hundred years. Princess Aurora and her sister Luna live in an isolated castle by the sea where all sharp objects are forbidden. Back when I was in school, hockey was my high school’s sport. If I had to be honest, I was excited to familiarize myself with the NHL again. Not, however, so disappointed that I planned to turn down the massive pay rise the Pumas promised me. I was sad to leave Washington DC for Salt Lake and to leave the NFL for the NHL. The Pumas headhunted me! To be headhunted as a nutritionist was a huge deal. Their diets are so specific, every player their own challenge.Īnd yet, the day I was approached by the Salt Lake Pumas felt just as exciting as the Washington Bears had. Working with professional athletes was so different than just working with so-called normal people. It was the toughest job I’d ever had but I loved every minute of it. How could it? Being asked to become the official nutritionist to an NFL team was career-changing! Life-changing, even!Īnd it had been, too. I was certain back then that absolutely nothing would ever beat that thrill. The day I got the call from the Washington Bears was one of the most exciting days in my life. Their first victim is Riley’s brother leading her, Trevor, and some other friends to begin an investigation into the puzzle box. The plot follows Riley (Odessa A’zion) as she and her not quite boyfriend Trevor (Drew Starkey) discover the puzzle box and accidentally call forth the demonic Cenobites who then demand sacrifice. Sadly, while the main story (after a brief prologue) of this new Hellraiser opens on a couple in the throes of passion, it quickly abandons any sexuality to become a fairly standard “you messed with something you shouldn’t have messed with” horror movie. Any story about hedonist sensual explorers needs to be about sensuality and desire at some level. The film, loosely based on Clive Barker’s The Hellbound Heart, is broadly about demons who are hedonistic sensual explorers, called forth when someone solves a magical puzzle box. It’s always unfair to compare new movies to their predecessors, but in the case of 2022’s Hellraiser reboot, the most meaningful comparison to 1987’s film of the same name simply compounds on an issue that arises from this new version itself: lack of sex. In her introduction, Helen Small explores the central themes of lying and truth-telling, placing the novel within contemporary political and social debates. It is also a highly revealing study of Victorian Britain, its colonial activities in Ireland and India, its veneration of wealth, and its pervasive dishonesty. A pompous Under-Secretary of State, an exploitative and acquisitive American and her unhappy "niece," a shady radical peer, and a brutal aristocrat are only some of the characters in this, one of Trollope's most engaging novels: part sensation fiction, part detective story, part political satire, and part ironic romance. The third in Trollope's six-volume Palliser series, The Eustace Diamonds boasts an extraordinary heroine in Lizzie Eustace, a lying schemer in the mould of Thackeray's Becky Sharp. Cyborg then offers to purchase him another one with his credit card, but Robot Man is still unaware that Cyborg isn't being truthful enough. Robot Man then suggests going to the beach to purchase ice creams, but Cyborg lies to Robot Man about his credit card usage before the trio head off.Īfter Robot Man sings a song about his friendship with Cyborg and Beast Boy, the three enjoy their ice cream when Robot Man's scoop drops onto the floor. The two cyborg boys even joke about their budding becoming toxic and unnatural. It turns out that Cyborg has accompanied Robin and the girls to defeat a monster in Codsville, but he is more interested in neglecting his duties, and quickly bonds with Robot Man over their own autonomy and mutual love for the 80's in spite of Beast Boy's initial worry of them getting jealous. Beast Boy then declares Robot Man as his bestie, until Cyborg abruptly jumps into their pool and splashes all of the water away. Robot Man and Beast Boy are enjoying in their small pool in the yard, regardless of how dirty and congested it is. Cyborg comes to visit Beast Boy, but once Cyborg realizes how much he and Robot Man have in common, they become inseparable. Victory Enterprises expenses include $8,000 for campaign management, more than $6,000 for yard signs, more than $2,000 for website expenses, and $3,000 for opposition research against his opponent Melanie Bach. Much of the expenditures have gone to Victory Enterprises, a political consulting firm based in Iowa. McClure has spent $20,811 so far in the campaign and has more than $45,000 left on hand.
You can alter someone’s feelings-and memories-but manipulating shadows has a cost, with the potential to take hours or days from your life. In Charlie Hall’s world, shadows can be altered, for entertainment and cosmetic preferences-but also to increase power and influence. #1 New York Times bestselling author Holly Black makes her stunning adult debut with Book of Night, a modern dark fantasy of shadowy thieves and secret societies in the vein of Ninth House and The Night Circus.
